News

The Stanford News feature is used to display news stories. You can display a few news items in a block or see them all on a full page view. 

Site owners can add, edit, and delete any news item. Editors can only add and edit any news item.

Creating a news item

Before starting, be sure to know the values for each of the fields listed in Stanford News Item fields.

  1. From the Site Actions menu, click Add News Item. You will get a Create News Item node edit form page.
  2. In the Title field, add the title of the news item.
  3. Click Add/Edit External Article Information text to open the date and source section.
  4. In the Date field, click into the field and choose the news item date from the calendar.
  5. In the Source field, add a link Title and URL to a location that is external to your site. (e.g. Stanford Report, http://news.stanford.edu/).
  6. In the Categories field, choose the appropriate category tag(s).
  7. In the News Image section, click Add/Edit image text to open the image tab. For more instructions on how to add an image, see Add a featured image.
  8. In the Body field, enter the news item text.
  9. In the External Link section, add an external site title and URL location (e.g. Stanford University, http://www.stanford.edu) (optional).
  10. In the Image Insert field, upload image(s) associated with this news item. For more instructions on how to insert images, see Insert images into the WYSIWYG editor.
  11. In the File Attachment section, upload document(s) associated with this news item. For more instructions on how to add documents, see Add documents.
  12. For more advanced fields, check the Featured checkbox if you want this news item to be featured.
  13. Click Save.

Updating a news item

You have several avenues for finding and editing a news item. If you find the news item you may see an Edit link which will direct you to the node edit page for that news item.  

Searching for a news item

  1. From the Site Actions menu, select Manage Content.
  2. In the Manage Content by Type section on the righthand side of the page, click the Manage News link.
  3. From this page, you can find all the Stanford News Items.  You can sort many of the columns by clicking on the header title, or search using the filters.  

Editing a news item

  1. From the Manage News page, click edit for the news item you want to change.
  2. Update/enter values as described under Creating a news item.

Bulk editing news items

  1. From the Manage News page, click the checkboxes to select mulitple news items you want to change.
  2. Click the Choose an operation arrow to choose an operation (e.g., Delete, Modify, Publish, Unpublish).
  3. Update the news item fields and confirm the changes.

Unpublishing/deleting a news item

You can either unpublish the news item to keep it on the site just not viewable or you can completely delete the news item.  If you delete the news item, this is not reversible.

  1. To unpublish a news item: From the Manage News page, click edit for the news item you want to unpublish. In the Publishing options horizontal tab, uncheck the Published status. (Bulk unpublish is optional.  See Bulk edit news items.)
  2. To delete a news item: From the Manage News page, click delete for the news item you want to delete. (Bulk delete is optional.  See Bulk edit news items.)

Stanford news fields

Field Description
Title The title of the news item.
Date The date associated with this news item.
Source If the news article comes from an external website, insert the article's source and URL link. (e.g. Stanford Report, http://news.stanford.edu/sr/)
Categories Choose the appropriate category tag(s) associated with this news item. If you do not have any Categories yet, a site administrator can add them, and integrate them with the site architecture.
News Image Upload a png, gif, jpg or jpeg file to the site.  The image field also includes optional image credits, source info, and caption information.
Body News item text.
External Link An optional external title and URL link associated with this news item. (e.g. Stanford University, http://www.stanford.edu).
Image Insert This is an optional field to insert additional images into the body field. Upload a png, gif, jpg or jpeg file to the site.
File Attachment An optional way to upload file attachments associated with this news item.
Featured This is a setting used to feature a news item in various places on the site (e.g., check "Featured" if you want to feature this item, leave unchecked if you do not want to feature this item). Contact Stanford Web Services to customize this for your site.
